On Thursday night me and my Boyfriend made this crumble after dinner for dessert and it took 30 minutes to prepare then it was in the oven for 25 minutes. This was good for us so that our fajitas had time to go down before we indulged again. The Crumble was served warm alongside some Ben and Jerry’s Cookie Dough ice cream. I think this is the best way to eat it because I love eating ice cream with warm desserts and as the ice-cream melts it gives the crumble more moisture. I can’t actually tell you how much I enjoyed this and I could have eaten the whole crumble in one setting. I didn’t though, and for breakfast the next morning we had another portion of the crumble and served alongside some fluffy banana and oat pancakes. You can find the recipe for these on my Instagram. You can also eat the crumble for breakfast served with some natural or Greek yogurt, this is a good quick breakfast before work, university or training.

Traditional Crumble is made from sugar, flour and butter but this one is made from almond nuts, oats and butter. Benefits of this crumble is that the oats provide a larger and slower release of carbohydrates, making it a good meal to have the night before a big training day or as a snack before a match, for example. The oats provide lots of healthy/saturated fats, which again will provide you with energy over a long time, so perfect to have before a bike ride or long run. However if you have sugar and flour, use these in the same way I used almonds and oats as it will still taste very yummy😊

Total price from Tesco (not including ice-cream) : £3.40

(This is assuming you have cinnamon in the cupboard)

Apple and Berry Crumble to serve 4-6 servings

50-60mins in total cooking time

INGREDIENTS:

For the filling:

2 apples, peeled, cored and chopped/sliced

250g berries, frozen or fresh

¼ mug of water

1 teaspoon of cinnamon

1 tablespoon of brown sugar

For the crumble:

50g butter

100g oats

45g ground almonds

45g flaked almonds (or any chopped nut)

2 tablespoons of brown sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

To serve:

Ice-cream, yogurt, custard.

STEP BY STEP:

Use a hob to oven dish if you have one, if you don’t just use a saucepan and then transfer to a ovenproof dish

1) Put the apples and berries into your dish over a medium heat. Add ¼ mug of water so the fruits start to steam. Leave these bubbling whilst you made the crumble and stir occasionally.

2) To make the crumble put all the dry crumble ingredients into a mixing bowl. Crumble butter into the mixture in small pieces.

3) With your fingertips, rub everything together to make a crumble/breadcrumb like texture.

4) Check that your fruits and apples are piping hot and the apples are soft. Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1 teaspoon of brown sugar to the fruit mixture and mix in.

5) If you used frozen fruit, there will be a lot of juices in the dish so drain this as best as possible, but you can keep it if you want.

6) Add the crumble mixture on top of the fruits and place in the oven for 25 minutes or until the crumble has started to a go golden brown colour.

7) Serve with whatever you want, whenever you want and enjoy 😊
